Iran's First Research Center in the fields of Geology, Natural Resources and Environmental studies
Since 2002
Background
Pars Geological Research Center (Arian Zamin) started its activities as a research group under the official permit dated October 2002 issued by the Development Council of Higher Education. Due to outstanding performance, this group got promoted and upgraded to a research center with three research groups back in December 2003, and since then it has been actively working and carrying out various research projects under the supervision and management of Dr. Mansour Ghorbani.
Areas of Research and Activities
Pars Geological Research Center has official permission to manage and run the following tasks:
- Applied and development studies in the areas of:
- Earth Science and Natural Resources (mines, energy and water resources)
- Environmental Studies
- Geo-Tourism on natural sceneries and beauties of Iran
- Fundamental research and studies on:
- Iran's geology,
- Physical geography of Iran,
- Environment and climate of Iran
- Compiling factual reports about physical/natural potentials of Iran, and introducing Iran's beauties and capabilities to the people around the world
- Geopolitical studies with respect to geographic location and energy resources of Iran
- Providing consulting services to domestic and international organizations
- Mutual collaboration with foreign scientific and professional institutions
Members and Contributors
Pars Geological Research Center has aimed to employ the most qualified scientists and experts in the fields of earth sciences and natural resources, and establish a mutual scientific collaboration with them. In the beginning the number of individuals working and collaborating with this center was 12, but today, there are 44 scientists and experts actively participating in the scientific projects and researches managed and run by this center. Pars Geological Research Center also provides the opportunity of part-time cooperation for those young researchers who would like to get involved and share their noble ideas with this center.

Research Projects
The research projects completed or currently being run and managed by Pars Geology Research Center (Arian Zamin) can be classified into 4 different categories as it follows:
4- Proposals for high priority regions
1- Completed Projects back to the top
- An overview on the natural resources of Iran and their position in the world
- Atlas of Iran Geology in scale of 1:500000,
- Collected a list of all (4500) deposits and indications of Iran with their complete metallogeny properties,
- Identified metallogenic provinces of Cu, Fe, Au, … in Iran,
- Introduced interesting geologic scenes (to be registered as geo-parks in Iran),
- Geology of young volcanoes of Iran,
- Prepared a complete databank of Mines and Mineral Deposits of Iran,
- Database of gem and gemology in Iran,
- Collected and compiled complete data on Cu, Fe, Au and Al deposits in Iran,
- Evaluation and assessment of porphyry copper deposits in Arasbaran region.
2- Undergoing projects back to the top
- Designing the databank of mining data of Central Asia countries,
- Introducing interesting and unique geologic features in Iran for the purpose of developing geo-parks and geo-tourism,
- Strategic planning of certain mineral resources with regards to their future outlook (such as: bentonite, barite, talc …),
3- Proposed projects back to the top
- Strategic planning for mines and industries of Iran's provinces with regards to their natural and mineral resources,
- Identify porphyry copper-bearing provinces, and nationwide exploration project,
- Proposing mining-industrial units with regards to mineral characteristics of any given region,
- Exploration project for Harat – Chakhcharan belt in western Afghanistan,
4- Proposals for high priority regions back to the top
Pars Geological Research Center (Arian Zamin) has studied parts of the country that contain unused vast plains, or possess mineral resources with common properties, where specific industrial units could be set up. So, in order to carry out such industrial and agricultural projects, this center has put the study of possibility of providing the fundamental resources (e.g. mining and energy potentials, surface water, and groundwater resources) on its agenda, and fortunately ended up with valuable results. Also, the center has located many interesting sites for eco-tourism and geo-tourism, and also prepared identification documents for each of them.
Pars Geological Research Center (Arian Zamin) is ready to cooperate (with both governmental and private sectors) in order to help them finish up incomplete projects, carry out already defined projects, and also to grant or transfer completed projects.
It is to be mentioned that research projects managed and run by this center are directed to appreciate and recognize Iran's natural resources. Economic indexes and factors are taken into account for these project, so they are economically safe and justified.
Published Books
Pars Geology Research Center (Arian Zamin) acquired publishing permit/certificate Iran's Ministry of Islamic Culture and Guidance in June 2002, and 15 books in different areas of geo-science have been published since then. This center also plans to publish and release the result of all of its research activities via Arian Zamin Press, which is part of Pars Geology Research Centere.
One of the areas that Pars Geology Research Center (Arian Zamin) would eagerly like to work on and publish books is the area of Iranology.

Development
Pars Geological Research Center intends to develop and expand its activities both at national and international levels in form of opening new offices and service centers for various fields of geology and environmental studies.
Educational Activities
Pars Geological Research Center (Arian Zamin) has been preparing reports and educational CDs to acquaint young researchers with Iran's natural resources in order to excel their knowledge and awareness about Iran's natural assets. These reports could also be useful to those individuals or companies who are either actively working or interested in investing in Iran's mining and energy sectors
Databases
Pars Geological Research Center (Arian Zamin) is in process of implementation of a geo-science databank that stores the following data:
- M.Sc. dissertations and Ph.D. theses in the fields of geology, geography and mining along with their abstracts
- Geological characteristics of all mineral deposits of Iran
- Mineral production numbers and stats by mineral type
- 1:500,000 geological maps of Iran compiled/digitized based on existing 1:250,000 geological maps
- Information about energy resources and the rate of their consumption
- Balance sheet of the water resources of Iran
- Current situation of forests and pastures according to the statistics
- Digitized geologic maps of Iran, in scale of 1:250000
